The Cushman scooter company started in 1903 in Lincoln, Nebraska, The founders names were Everett and Clinton Cushman. Then a decade later, they renamed the company Cushman Motor Works, Inc. in 1913. Cushman began production of their four-stroke Husky engine in 1922 which were used in farm equipment, pumps, lawn mowers and boats.  

The most successful scooter Cushman made was called the Eagle. In 1958 alone, Cushman manufactured 15,000 scooters. The last production run was made in 1965 and they were sold out by 1966.  Cushman scooters generally weighed around 250 lb (110 kg) to 335 lb (152 kg) and had as much as 9 horsepower (6.7 kW). In comparison to European scooters, Cushman scooters were heavier and with larger engines (up to 0.4 L), but not more power in comparison to its competitors.
