Description

"Alhambra Granada Spain"

Location: Spain

The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. This palatial citadel is located on a rocky hill that is not easy to access and on the banks of the river Darro. The fortress is protected by the mountains and surrounded by forest. The Alhambra rises like an imposing castle of reddish tones in its walls that hide to the exterior the delicate beauty of its interior.

Alhambra derives from the Arabic الْحَمْرَاء al-Ḥamrāʼ (f.), meaning "the red one", perhaps due to the color tone of the towers and walls that completely surround the hill of La Sabica, which under the light of the stars looks silver color, but in the light of the sun acquires a more gold tone. Our special EFX color change technology attempts to emulate this color change during dusk on a very unique print.

Exactly how long a structure stood at this strategic location is unknown. Most likely it predated the Roman empire. We do know that the Roman Republic seized territories in the Iberian Peninsula that were previously under the control of the Carthaginian Empire. The Carthaginian territories in the south and east of the peninsula were conquered in 206 BC during the Second Punic War. Roman control gradually extended over the Iberian Peninsula after the end of the Roman Republic (27 BC), by Augustus, the first Roman emperor, who annexed the whole of the peninsula to the Roman Empire in 19 BC.

It's believed the oldest parts of the Alhambra was constructed as a small fortress ontop of the remains of an ancient Roman fortification in 889 AD. It then sat and was ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the 11th century by the Amazigh king Badis ibn Habus of the Zirid dynasty and later completed in the 14th century by the Arab Nasrid dynasty.
It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. After the conclusion of the Christian Reconquista in 1492, the site became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella; This is where Christopher Columbus received royal endorsement for his expedition to find a water passage to India. In 1526, Charles I of Spain commissioned a new Renaissance palace better befitting the Holy Roman Emperor and parts of the palace and gardens were renovated to reflect the Renaissance art and culture at that time, but many Arabic artistic influences were untouched and remain today in the 21st century.
