"Altar of the Fatherland"
The Altar of the Fatherland was first an altar of the goddess Rome, then also a shrine of the Italian Unknown Soldier, adopting the function of a lay temple consecrated to Italy. Standing in the center of ancient Rome, this lay temple is metaphorically dedicated to a free and united Italy. It celebrates the sacrifice and burial of the Unknown Soldier for the homeland and connected ideals. You can also see an evening view of the Colosseum in this Roman cityscape art print.
