"Atlas at Rockefeller Center"
The famous Atlas is a bronze statue in Rockefeller Center is in the International Building's courtyard, located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. It is across Fifth Avenue from St. Patrick's Cathedral. The bronze statue depicts the ancient Greek Titan (half man & half god) Atlas holding the heavens on his shoulders. The Art Deco sytle sculpture was created by sculptor Lee Lawrie and Rene Paul Chambellan and was installed at this well visited location in 1937.
Atlas is depicted carrying the celestial vault on his shoulders. The north-south axis of the armillary sphere on his shoulders points towards the North Star's position relative to New York City. The statue stands on one muscular leg atop a small stone pedestal, whose corner faces Fifth Avenue.
It can be argued that this statue was made even more popular after the writer Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged came out in 1957. The picture was used on the cover of the book and symbolized world economies toppling of the shrugging Atlas' shoulders who could no longer bear the heavier and heavier load of a corrupt big government stealing from the ingenuity of business entrepreneurs.
