James Watson is a U.S. molecular biologist, geneticist and zoologist, best known as one of the co-discoverers of the twisted-ladder structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) Double Helix in 1953 with Francis Crick who was a British molecular biologist, biophysicist, and neuroscientist. Both were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962.

DNA is a molecule of genetics that establishes each organism's physical characteristics. But it wouldn't be until about 50 years later (mid-2001), that the Human Genome Project and Celera Genomics jointly presented the true nature and complexity of the digital code inherent in DNA. We now understand that each human DNA molecule is comprised of chemical bases arranged in approximately 3 billion precise sequences.

A DNA strand is a long, thin molecule—averaging only about two nanometers (or two billionths of a meter) in width. That is so thin, that a human hair is about 40,000 times as wide. Even the DNA molecule for the single-celled bacterium, E. coli, contains enough information to fill all the books in any of the world's largest libraries.

Interesting enough, even before the Human Genome Project, Francis Crick did understand the incredible complexity of this engineering marvel. Crick understood that individual nucleotides could NOT spontaneously assemble (in any given amount of time) and form DNA, which is gives an organism all its characteristics AND capable of repairing itself AND capable of replicating itself.

The Double Helix is far less likely to come into spontaneous existence than say a revolver pistol, which is by far a less complex piece of engineering. So what is then is the origin of DNA? Crick, an outspoken atheist, obviously could not attribute DNA to a G_d, but he espoused a theory of Panspermia.

Panspermia is a theory which proposes that life on Earth was the result of a deliberate infection (spores), designed by aliens who brought DNA from another world to ours. This theory requires great faith, a faith that probably exceeds the faith of theists. But note, this theory of Panspermia actually doesn't address the question of the origin of DNA, it only moves the question of origin to another solar system or galaxy.
