Description
"Grainstack (Sunset)," by Claude Monet
In 1890 and 1891, Monet painted a series of pictures depicting stacks of wheat, also referred to as, haystacks or grainstacks. He used the fields near his home for his artistic inspiration, exhibiting them to great critical acclaim in 1891. Traditionally, the motifs in Claude Monet paintings have been seen as vehicles to explore interaction to light, color, and form over the course of the day and in different weather conditions. Scholars have recently proposed that Monet may have also been interested in the meaning and significance behind those motifs as well. So the grainstacks in Claude Monet art, for example, could be seen as traditonal symbols of the land's fertility, local farmers' material wealth and the region's prosperity.
