Even the headlight along with the rest of the 1926 Bugatti Type 38 automobile is a work of art and feat of engineering. Replacing the Type 30, the Type 38 was Bugatti's second generation straight-eight, two-liter engine. The first inline eights had built up a great reputation with the Type 30. Many of the same components used in the Type 30 remained in the Type 38 -including the crankshaft.

Compared to the Type 30, the Type 38 introduced a longer wheelbase and a wider track. The engine was very similar to the Type 35A unit, having a triple ball-bearing crankshaft. Type 38s were produced for a short period from 1926, until 1927. According to records taken during that era, only 385 Bugatti Type 38s were produced during that time period.
