Description
"Lightning Strikes the Sea"
A lightning storm out on the Mediterranean Sea striking the water with a boat and beach in the foreground. Watch how our special EFX color changing prints makes this a truly dynamic work of art. Picture taken at Barca, which is a coastal city in Libya. This ancient city Barca and its beach head is historically significant and was occupied by numerous empires. The number of ships, sailors, and soldiers that that landed at this beach throughout history is a very big number.
The earliest accounts have Barca was originally a settled by a Libyan tribe called the Barraci. Later, around 560 BC Greek settlers from Cyrene colonized it, built up the city and it became even a more powerful and strategic trading city and called it Barce (Βάρκη). Some countries today still refer to this city as Barce.
Later the city was captured by the Persians, then eventually the Romans, and then later the Byzantine empire. In time Barce was part of the Exarchate of Africa until it was conquered by the Arabs in 643–644 during the Islamic conquest of North Africa. It originally served as the capital of the Barqah province of the Caliphate. When the Ottoman Turks conquered the region in 1521, they called it "Barka", again but used the term to refer to the entire province.
