Description
"Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat" by Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh produced more than twenty self-portraits during his stay in and near Paris, France (1886–88). This painting was done in 1887. As a poor and hungry artist and living frugally, van Gogh was determined nevertheless to practice and hone his skills as a portrait painter, so he became his own best sitter: "I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model." This picture, which shows Vincent's keen awareness of Neo-Impressionist technique and color theory.
