"Stephan's Quintet Galaxies Illuminated"

Stephan’s Quintet, a grouping of five galaxies, is shown in a new illuminated image from the James Webb Space Telescope. With its powerful infrared vision and extremely high spatial resolution, Webb shows this galaxy group with new detail, capturing huge shock waves, sparkling clusters of young stars and regions of fresh star formation. This proximity allows astronomers to witness and better understand the merging and interactions between galaxies that are crucial to galaxy evolution, as well as, the rate at which supermassive black holes feed and grow. Webb also sees star-forming regions much more directly and it is able to examine dust emission at a level of detail impossible to obtain until now.
