Description
"Vase of Carnations" by Vincent van Gogh
While in Paris and during the summer of 1886, van Gogh was prolific in painting still life flowers. Vincent painted at least 35 flower still lifes. This floral arrangement of carnations that van Gogh painted most likely was painted between July and September 1886 when he was staying in Paris. He had moved into the apartment on the Rue Lepic that had belonged to his brother Theo.
Theo worked for the art agency Goupil & Cie; he was in charge of the branch on the Boulevard Montmartre. Theo was authorized to exhibit works by modern artists such as the Impressionists and the Pointillists. He was good friends with a number of them; one of them was Adolphe Monticelli.
Theo owned a floral painting from Monticelli which we know made a big and lasting impression on Vincent. With the ability to arrange colors with flower arrangements, it allowed van Gogh to hone his skills in the use of color and tonality. In his later letters to Theo, Vincent mentions the floral still life by Monticelli in multiplel letters.
