Description

"BMW R2" by Daniel Peirce

With the collapse of Germany's Welmar economy what coincided with the American Wall Street Crash of 1928, people couldn't afford larger motorcycles. All larger and more powerful motorcycles we hard it, with fewer customers able to afford their premium purchase price and the fuel to run them. BMW then introduced a smaller bike with less frills to reduce the purchase price and maintenance costs. Also, BMW wanted to include in their product line a motorbike that riders could purchase and use without a motorcycle license. Back then bikes and other motorized vehicles that were less than 200 cc did not require a motorcycle license. So, BMW introduced the BMW R2 in 1931. It's first series (i.e. Series 1) was introduced in 1931 and 4,161 units were sold. The Series 1 was discontinued when their Series 2 came out the following year in 1932. This was version was known as the "people's bike".
