Description

"Brandenburg Gate"

A magnificent sunset at Germany's Brandenburg Gate! One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, the Brandenburg Gate (in German: Brandenburger Tor) is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, Germany. It was commissioned to be built by the Prussian king Frederick William II after the temporary restoration of order during the Batavian Revolution; It was to represent peace and was originally named the Peace Gate (in German Friedenstor).

The famous landmark was built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg. The gate is also the monumental entry to a boulevard, which led directly to the royal City Palace of the Prussian monarchs. The architects name was Carl Gotthard Langhans and construction on this gate started in 1788 and was completed in 1791.

The Brandenburg Gate throughout its existence was the venue for many major historical events and is today considered not only as a symbol of the tumultuous histories of Germany and Europe, but also of European unity and peace. Atop the gate is a sculpture by Johann Gottfried Schadow of a chariot drawn by four horses - driven by the Roman goddess Victoria (aka goddess of victory).
