Butterflies are one of the most beautiful insects on this planet. They enthrall people with their delicacy, gentleness, and jewel-like colors. They’re not only beautiful to look at, but as pollinators of all sorts of plants, they’re necessary. Some butterflies have always been rare, but due to habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, too many of them are endangered as well. Some butterflies are attracted to only certain flowers and in many cases only that species of butterfly can pollinate a particular flower for its nectar. It's tragic that the loss of one, leads to the loss of the other.

This Blue Morpho butterfly is considered one of the top 10 rarest butterflies in the world. The genus name Morpho comes from an Ancient Greek whose word best translates to "the shapely one", for Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. It has a vivid iridescent blue coloring because of its microscopic scales on the backs of their wings. This rare butterfly absorbs all the wavelengths of visible light spectrum, except this shade of iridescent blue which is reflected back to us. The Blue Morpho has on average a 5.5 inch wingspan, gorgeous sapphire blue wings, and is native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Both male and female butterflies have iridescent blue wings. You can tell the female from the male, because the females are edged in brown and have white spots.
