Description

"Matchless Brough Superior SS80" by Daniel Peirce

The founder George Brough designed and built the Brough Superior SS80 motorcycle. This bike was built in Nottingham, UK from 1922 to 1939. During that time, it was known as "The Rolls-Royce of Motor Cycles". Unfortunately like many other civilian products, production of the Brough Superior SS80 ended when World War II started in 1939.

One of George Brough's design requirements and guarantees to the consumer is that the Brough Superior SS-80 could reach at least 80 mph (130 km/h). This standard, during that time, put it well beyond the reach of most other motorcycles.

Only 32 Superior SS80s were built in 1935. Two types of engines were used for the SS80s. The earlier models were fitted with 988 cc (60.3 cu in) J.A.P. side valve engine. Then later Brough used a 982cc (59.9 cu in) Matchless V-twin engine but with a customized Brough's modified big end arrangement to raise HP. Before production ceased when World War II started in 1939, their plant had produced a total of 1,086 SS80's, of which 460 had Matchless engines.
