Description

"Matchless" by Daniel Peirce

The Matchless name is one of the oldest marques for British motorcycles. The Matchless motorcycle was manufactured in Plumstead, London, between the years of 1899 and 1966. Numerous different motorcycle models were produced under the Matchless name that ranged from the small two-strokes to 750 cc four-stroke twins. Matchless had a long history of racing success; Charlie Collier rode a Matchless and won the first single-cylinder race in the first Isle of Man TT in 1907. In 1938, AMC or Associated Motorcycles acquired Matchless and started producing models under their own marques. Eventually the in the 1960s the Matchless four-stroke twin was replaced with the Norton twin and this ended Matchless' long history. By 1967, all Matchless motorcycles ceased production.
