Description

"Mondial 1957" by Daniel Peirce

The motorcycle manufacturer FB Mondial was founded in 1929, in Milan, Italy. This company's motorcycles dominated the Motorcycle World Championship races between 1949 and 1957. FB Stands for "Fratelli Boselli" whom the founding Boselli brothers Luigi, Carlo, Ettore, and Ada named after their father. They manufactured some of the most advanced and successful Grand Prix road racers of the time, winning five rider and five manufacturer World Championships in that short period.

Mondial was a specialty motorcycle manufacturer making only high-performance, small-displacement motorcycles. Much of the production of each motorcycle was made by hand, which kept total production quantities very low, with production numbers typically ranging only from 1,000 to 2,000 units per year. Mondial were able to continue this success for a number of years, sticking with this "hand crafted" methodology.

In 1957, Soichiro Honda approached Mondial owner at that time Count Boselli and desired to purchase a Mondial racebike, with which Mondial had recently won the 125 cc and 250 cc world titles. Count Boselli gave Mr. Honda a racing Mondial as a gift; Honda used this bike as a standard to which he aspired, in order to compete on a world-scale. At the time this article was written, an original Mondial 125 cc racebike ison display when entering Honda's Motegi Collection Hall.
