Description

"Wheat Field with Cypresses" by Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh was enamoured by these large cypress trees. This was painted in late June 1889 one of his first series in Saint-Rémy to the towering trees. From May 1889 to May 1890, Vincent van Gogh was a patient at the Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. While here and battling his mental illness, he painted some of his most memorable works, including The Starry Night, which features the town. "Wheat Field with Cypresses" was painted just outside the ancient and provincial city of Saint-Rémy.

Van Gogh regarded this painting as one of his “best” summer landscapes and in September he made two studio renditions: one on the same scale (National Gallery, London) and the other a smaller replica, as a gift for his mother and sister (private collection).
