Description

"Yamaha XS 650" by Daniel Peirce

The Yamaha XS 650 was a mid-size motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha Motor Company. The XS 650 began with the 1955 Hosk SOHC 500 twin motorcycle engine. After about 10 years of producing 500 twin, Hosk engineers designed a 650 cc twin. The Yamaha 650 was produced until 1985. The last model year for the bike was 1983 in the United States, with Canada, Europe and other markets selling excess inventory in 1984 and 1985.

The Yamaha XS 650 was launched in October 1969. During that time it had one of the most advanced engines in its class of large parallel twin motorcycles. The engine has a 360° crank which means the pistons go up and down together. The engine and gearbox are single unit construction with the crankcase split horizontally to allow for ease of assembly.
