Description
"Matchless UNS" by Daniel Peirce
Matchless is one of the oldest marque names for British motorcycles. Although it no longer exists, Matchless was one of the earliest British motorcycle companies. The Matchless motorcycle was manufactured in Plumstead, London, between the years of 1899 and 1966. Numerous different motorcycle models were produced under the Matchless name that ranged from the small two-strokes to 750 cc four-stroke twins. Matchless had a long history of racing success; Charlie Collier rode a Matchless and won the first single-cylinder race in the first Isle of Man TT in 1907. In 1938, Associated Motorcycles (AMC) acquired Matchless and started producing models under their own marques. Eventually the in the 1960s the Matchless four-stroke twin was replaced with the Norton twin and this ended Matchless' long history. By 1967, all Matchless motorcycles had ceased being made. Matchless made its reputation through winning races. The "UNS" is not part of the official name of the motorcycle, but these initials are an acronym that the photographer Daniel Peirce used in dedicating particular works of art to the Up-N-Smoke Project; Named after the Up-N-Smoke BBQ restauarant and Motorsports bar in Keller, TX.
